The Best Mattresses for Children, Toddlers, & Babies That You Can Buy Online

Looking for the best mattress you can buy online for your kid, toddler, or baby? We've got the top brands and what they offer here — and you may be surprised what you can get delivered in a box.

As we investigated the best kids' mattresses available online, the issue of safety kept coming up.  How safe is each mattress model for kids, toddlers, and babies, and what are the certifications necessary to prove it?

Considering that each child spends approximately 3,923 hours per year on their mattress according to some calculations,  (or 39230 hours if the mattress is kept for 10 years), the construction and components of the mattress, as well as any chemicals involved in the manufacturing process, gain increased importance.

We got into some detailed articles on the subject, which we'll highlight for you in each section of this guide to the best kids' mattresses online.

Best types of mattresses and labels for kids and toddlers

It's incredibly important to ask questions and read labels thoroughly when choosing the best mattresses for kids' beds. While there are countless mattresses out there to choose  from, there are 2 main variations to keep in mind:

  • The innerspring, usually layered and made with one of two types of inner springs.
  • The foam, usually made of polyurethane.

There are also hybrids of those two, as well as latex models — which some say are great for allergy-sufferers (if they're 100% natural latex).

Then there are the confusing textile labels.

  • The USDA organic logo is great to find, but while it does ensure how the fibers of the mattress were grown, it does not necessarily provide assurance of the processing methods involved.
  • Oeko-Tek indicates the screening out of harmful substances, and is found primarily on European and Japanese labels — but if found in the U.S., it may indicate only certain parts of the product meet the standard's criteria and not the whole thing.
  • The GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) provides quality assurance of several key safety and environmental criteria (i.e. its label requires that at least 70% of the product fibers are organic), but it hasn't yet been universally accepted.
  • Certi-PUR indicates the foam in the mattress is made without certain hazardous chemicals, i.e. ozone depleters, heavy metals like mercury and lead, PBDEs, TDCPP, or TCEP flame retardants, phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and formaldehyde, as well as being low VOC.
  • Finally, Greenguard certification means the product has met rigorous standards for emissions of VOCs into indoor air.

Each type of mattress generally has it's pros and cons and it's for you to decide what's best for your family —  but we'll provide you with the basics you need to know on each of the best mattresses for kids' beds suggested below:

Things to consider when shopping for a children's mattress

When shopping for the littlest members of the family, extra care must always be taken. Of course, crib mattresses must be held to the highest of safety and quality standards and be firm  enough to  avoid suffocation, so a foam mattress would probably not be  recommended  for a crib.

Toddlers or older kids could opt for an eco-friendly foam, but may also be better off with an innerspring, depending upon the age, developmental stage, and abilities of the child.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Will the mattress be/remain firm enough to ensure their face doesn't sink in as they sleep and cause breathing difficulties?
  • Can the child turn themselves over easily or turn their heads independently if they're having trouble breathing?
  • Can they do this both when awake and while they're sleeping?
  • Do they have any allergies which might be exacerbated by any components of the mattress?
  • Do they take any medications that induce a deep sleep/might prevent them from waking if they started to have trouble breathing?
  • Are there any chemicals in the mattress which are hazardous to inhale or lie on over a period of time? Is there a period of offgassing during which the child should not sleep on the bed?
  • Will they be able to get into/out of bed independently if they need to use the bathroom or if there's an emergency?
  • Parents and caregivers will want to look carefully into these and other safety issues and seek out the proper certifications when browsing for a baby or toddler mattress.

Overall, with all the proper consideration given to these concerns, we've decided on 'best of' winners of the following categories:

  1. Pure-Rest Organic for the Level 10 health/eco-conscious family

Best online mattresses for toddlers and young children

Our research on the subject suggests that the best toddler mattress for you which can be ordered online may be one of these 3.   Be sure to give them a glance as you shop:

Pure-Rest Organic

Price: Youth mattresses range from $990-1900 for sizes up to a Twin XL (Adult mattresses can cost as much as $3400 for a Cal King). They also have crib mattresses starting at $325.

*There's a Clearance and Special Sales section on their site to watch for deals.

Are these recommended for children/toddlers? Yes, they have a whole section of youth as well as crib mattresses. Pure-Rest is recommended by Consumer Reports as well as Organic and Healthy, Inc. as a 100% organic company in business in San Diego, CA since 1992.

What are the delivery options? Delivery is made via UPS Ground from San Diego. For my location in Michigan, shipping would be $45 for a youth mattress. To find your shipping rate, put the mattress you like in your shopping cart here and enter your shipping data.

Do they have any safety (or other) certifications? Numerous! To give you an idea, here some of them:

Is there an in-home trial offered? No.

Refund/warranty policies? Pure-Rest mattresses may not be returned once opened unless they are defective. Mattresses come with a 20-year warranty (10 years fixed + 10 years prorated); crib mattresses come with a 10-year warranty (5 years fixed + 5 years prorated) If you are especially sensitive to smells, you may order a mattress test kit prior to purchase. Details can be read here

Pros:

  • 100% organic with numerous safety and environmental certifications
  • Made with no toxic chemicals, no synthetic rubber, polyester, or other fillers
  • Tested for contaminants by an independent lab on a regular basis
  • Recommended by Consumer Reports and Organic and Healthy, Inc.
  • Warranties are offered for 10-20 years depending upon the type of mattress you order

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • No free shipping

Bottom Line:

Although they are quite pricey, Pure-Rest mattresses are probably among the purest you can find for children's (and adult) mattresses.

Since some groups insist the offgassing of children's mattresses is extremely toxic, with some researchers believing they may play a significant role in the development of certain childhood disorders and only some states banning the flame retardants often responsible, the possibility of an organic option is attractive. If you can afford these, we think they're probably worth it.

Naturepedic

Next stop on our adventure to find the best mattress for toddlers brings us to the Naturepedic Verse Organic Kids' Mattress.

Naturepedic makes organic products (mattresses and bedding) for adults, children, and babies, each GOTS-certified and hand-crafted by Amish artisans.

Their kids' collection features 3 main mattresses:

Our favorite is the Naturepedic Verse Organic Mattress as it's been reviewed and given high praises by Green Child magazine, Business Insider, HackToSleep, and Amazon reviewers, as well as carrying an 8.9/10 rating on Slumber Search.

Price: Twins start at $899, and prices range up to the Queen size at $1299.

What are the delivery options? It ships via FedEx Ground, Curbside, or Threshold (In-Home Setup can be arranged with advanced notice), compressed and roll-packed, and assembly is covered in this video. For my address in Michigan, they quoted me the shipping rate of $75. If you're near one of their retail locations, you may be able to pick your order up and spare yourself the delivery fee; check their locations here.

Do they have any safety (or other) certifications? Yes, they have many certifications, and have received numerous endorsements and awards. Here are some for example:

Is there an in-home trial offered? No.

Refund/warranty policies? Naturepedic offers a 30-day money back guarantee for all kids' products purchased through the official Naturepedic site. (If you purchased your mattress elsewhere, i.e. Amazon, follow their return policies.) Kids' mattresses carry a 10-year limited warranty.

Pros:

Cons:

  • Some felt their mattress was a bit too firm (although firm mattresses are safer for small children and babies)
  • Expensive

Bottom Line:

These are superior quality, durable, safe mattresses for children lasting at least 10 years. If you find them too firm, returns are offered within 30 days of purchase - but buyer pays all return shipping costs. Your best bet may be to find a Naturepedic retailer here and check them out in person before ordering.

Nest Bedding

Third on our voyage to find the best toddler mattress available online, we arrive at Nest Bedding.

Nest Bedding offers luxury mattresses, bedding, and other furniture both online and in several showrooms nationwide. They make two mattresses designed especially for kids, one being the BKB, or 'Big Kids' Bed', perfect for toddlers, and the other, being a bit more for older kids, is the Love & Sleep model. Both are shown below.

Those seeking online toddler mattresses will want to check out the BKB first.

The Nest BKB is the first bed-in-a-box kids' mattress available online. Using only CertiPUR-US certified foams, no toxic ingredients, and no chemical fire barrier, the BKB is likely a healthy choice for your child's bed.

The BKB is 7 inches tall, slightly thinner than adult mattresses, and comes in Twin, Twin XL, and Full sizes. Useable with any base, including bunk beds or trundles, the BKB is durable and comfy for kids up to 120 pounds.

For larger or older kids, there's the Love & Sleep mattress:

Greenguard Gold certified and also made in the USA, the Love & Sleep bed is constructed of latex-free, vitamin and mineral-infused Energex foam and a SmartFlow Air Flow layer with Thermic Phase Change Cooling Fabric to ensure your kid sleeps nice and cool.

Price: The BKB starts at $299 and the Love & Sleep starts at $399.

Are these recommended for children/toddlers? Yes, for toddlers and both small and larger/older children. (They also make crib mattresses, though they were not reviewed here today.) They are made in the USA, non-toxic, with CertifPUR-US certified foam and a soft topped, simple design. The BKB and the Love & Sleep both have consistent 4 and 5 star ratings throughout top industry online review sites.

What are the delivery options? They ship to you free of charge via FedEx or UPS to your doorstep, and most deliveries do not require a signature. Contact one of their stores by phone during business hours to arrange White Glove delivery.

Do they have any safety (or other) certifications? Yes, their foams are CertiPUR-US certified and the Love & Sleep is Greenguard Gold certified.

Is there an in-home trial offered? Yes, a 100-night in-home trial is offered. Want to check Nest Bedding out in a showroom before you purchase? There are several nationwide; check their locator here.

Refund/warranty policies? Exchanges or returns are offered after the 30th day of your 100-night in-home trial. Read the details here. Nest Bedding products come with a Limited Lifetime Warranty, explained in detail here. After the 100-night trial ends, if your needs change and you require a different kind of mattress to be comfortable, Nest offers the Lifetime Comfort Guarantee, which allows you to buy a different bed for 50% of the current retail price (BKB Kids' Bed excluded).

Pros:

  • Made in the USA
  • All foams used are CertiPUR-US certified
  • Love & Sleep is Greenguard Gold certified
  • There's a lengthy 100-night in-home trial
  • More affordable than some other brands
  • Lifetime Warranty

Cons:

  • Some complained about a slight offgassing odor, but usually passes within 1-2 days
  • Fewer safety and environmental certifications than some other brands

Bottom Line:

These became popular as the first online kids' mattresses offered (although there are lots more now!) and they're much more affordable than some others we've covered, too. If you don't mind these having fewer safety and environmental certifications, you're probably good to go here. I'd let the mattress sit in a well-ventilated room (i.e. with the windows wide open, if possible) for at least 2 full days and nights to make sure the offgassing passes before allowing the child to sleep on it - even then, make sure to monitor for headaches, etc. throughout the in-home trial.

Best online mattresses for older or larger kids

For older or larger kids, these next beds are ideal. Let's visit the Casper Essential first:

Casper

We think one of the best twin mattresses for kids might be the Casper kids' mattress. From the moment they see it's arrived in its cool striped box to the minute they stretch out on it for the first time, kids are sure to be stoked about you ordering their new Casper Essential!

Although not specifically made for kids, the Casper Essential does the job with its size, cover, and consistency - and especially its price.

It's about 1 1/2 inches thinner than the original Casper, and comes with a super easy-to-clean removable (and dark, stain-hiding) cover, is constructed of 3 layers of CertiPUR-US certified foam, and all cover tops and fire socks are OEKO-TEX certified.

Available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King and Cal King sizes, the Casper Essential mattress prices are super low. ($350-$725).

Got a kid who likes to change rooms a lot, drag their mattress into the living room for Movie Night, or plans to leave for college soon? They're likely to love their lightweight Casper Essential. The Twins weigh only 44 pounds, and can be easily transported from one room - or residence - to another.

Price: Essentials start at $350 for a Twin and range up to $725 for a Cal King.

Are these recommended for children/toddlers? Yes. Sleep Advisor sees these as ideal kids' mattresses as they're thinner than adult mattresses, useable with almost any type of foundation, cheaper than most, light and can be moved easily, comprised of CertiPUR-US certified foams, and they sleep cool.

What are the delivery options? These are delivered free of charge via UPS Standard throughout the contiguous U.S. and parts of Canada. In some parts of New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, they offer same day courier delivery.

Do they have any safety (or other) certifications? Yes, their foams are CertiPUR-US certified and their fire socks and cover tops are OEKO-TEX certified.

Is there an in-home trial offered? Yes, 100 nights.

Refund/warranty policies? Free returns are offered until the 100th night of your in-home trial. Each mattress comes with a 10-year warranty.

Pros:

  • Superb customer service reps are available 7 days per week to answer questions
  • Lightweight, easy to move around
  • Affordable
  • Comes with a lengthy 100-night in-home trial
  • Works with almost any supportive base

Cons:

  • Fewer certifications than some other brands
  • Might not be supportive enough for very heavy individuals

Bottom Line:

The Casper Essential gives sleepy kids a supportive, medium-firm feel and the streamlined construction helps keep them cool all night. Easy and light enough to drag from room to room, even the most nomadic of children will love their Essential. If they're heavier or prefer more than two safety/environmental certifications, this one may not be well-suited.

Lucid

Moving along, the next stop on our quest for the best foam mattresses for kids is Lucid.

When you shop by room on the Lucid site, the 'Kids' Bedroom' category suggests 3 models:

The most economical of the 3 Lucid kids' models is the 5-inch memory foam mattress, shown here, starting at $150:

Perfect for any base, this model works in daybeds, trundles, and bunk beds - and lots more:

Its 3 layers are made of a soft, breathable cover, comfy gel-infused memory foam, and a supportive base foam.

But while rated as an excellent mattress for back and stomach sleepers, Lucid thinks side sleepers may be happier with a different model.

They may be happier, for example, with the 6 inch gel memory mattress, shown below, perfect for back, stomach, and side sleepers:

or the 8 inch gel memory foam kids' mattress shown below, which is great for all sleep styles and preferences.

All Lucid kids' mattress models are available in 7 sizes (Full, Full XL, Queen, Twin, Twin XL, Cal King, King), ship directly to your doorstep, and offer a 10-year warranty.

Price: The 5 inch gel memory starts at $150, the 6 inch starts at $175, and the 8 inch starts at $225.

Are these recommended for children/toddlers? Yes, these are advertised as designed for children, specifically because they fit into bunk beds and trundles, are lightweight and easy to move, and allow for a cozy but cool feel so kids can sleep through the night.

What are the delivery options? These are shipped free of charge to your doorstep, expected to arrive within 5-7 days of your order.

Do they have any safety (or other) certifications? Yes, the foam used in their mattresses and mattress toppers is CertiPUR-US® certified.

Is there an in-home trial offered? No.

Refund/warranty policies? Refunds are accepted within 30 days of purchase if item is unused and still in its original packaging. There is a 10-year warranty on all mattresses.

Pros:

  • Covers are easy to remove for cleaning
  • Lightweight and perfect for small bodies
  • Expands to full size and shape quickly
  • Fits on any foundation

Cons:

  • Slight offgassing may take a day or two to pass
  • Fewer certifications than some other brands

Bottom Line:

An easy bed when a kiddo needs a quick replacement, but there's not a lot to spend. Lucid mattresses work with almost any foundation or frame. Not much for certifications, but the foam is CertiPUR-US certified. You'll get a 10% off coupon code when you subscribe to their email list as well.

Sleep Number Kids

Here we go again, looking to our next discovery of the best mattresses for kids' beds, and we arrive at the foot of Sleep Number Kids beds — and yes, these are adjustable for kids' comfort just like the adult versions!

The star of the show is the Sleep Number SleepIQ Kids K2 Bed, shown below, which is described as "the smart bed that adjusts with them as they grow."

The Sleep Number SleepIQ Kids K2 Bed is offered in Twin, Full, and Queen sizes, and either with or without a base. It also comes in both Denim or Lime color (Denim is shown above).

Here it is in Lime:

There's also additional features available with the bed's app, including remote lighting control so parents can turn the lights off from their room after the child has fallen asleep, and alerts to let the parent know if the child is sleeping soundly, awake, or has left the bed, and under-bed lights that automatically turn on when the child gets out of bed during the night. There's even a 'Monster Detector' feature!

FYI parents and caregivers, there's a bunch of other cute stuff in the Sleep Number Kids section, too, if you want to shop for plush toys (these little monsters may come in handy with the 'Monster Detector' feature of the app), sheets, pillowcases, lounge pillows, or other accessories.

Price: Twins start at $799.

Are these recommended for children/toddlers? Yes, for children, but not kids under 4. (There's a K1 model for kids ages 4-14 and the K2 model for kids age 10 and up).

What are the delivery options? For shipping options, Sleep Number offers standard UPS Ground with easy-to-follow at-home assembly instructions if your order qualifies for it. Otherwise there is Comfort Service Home Delivery for in-home setup for a fee. The SleepIQ Kids k2 bed can be delivered either way.

Do they have any safety (or other) certifications? No information was found regarding certifications.

Is there an in-home trial offered? Yes, 100 nights.

Refund/warranty policies?  All Sleep Number beds are covered by the Select Comfort 2-20-25 warranty, which means the following: 2 years full coverage, years 3-20 prorated, years 21-25 get 96% coverage. Returns are possible within 30 days of your order, but you must contact Customer Service for a RSO number before returning your mattress; details are offered here.

Pros:

  • Reputable company
  • Free shipping available
  • In-home setup available
  • 100 night trial
  • 2-20-25 Warranty

Cons:

  • No safety or environmental certifications can be found
  • Pricey

Bottom Line:

You would think a company like Sleep Number would rest assured have the best mattresses for kids beds. And maybe they do. But no certifications of any kind? They are listed on the CertiPUR partipating companies list, but it does not state for which product/s. Aside from that, these appear to be high quality and durable mattresses, likely to last a while. The warranty is nice in case of possible defects. If you don't mind the price or the lack of easily-found certifications, go for it!

AeroBed

For the family that travels often, a long summer camping trip, or the kid who likes to have lots of sleepovers at Grandma's house, enter the AeroBed Inflatable Mattress for Kids.

This handy air mattress comes with its own proper air pump, and easily inflates in minutes. When fully inflated, it measures 50 inches long by 25 inches wide, and is described on Business Insider as having a slight recession on one side surrounded by an elevated 'wall' around its perimeter, designed to keep little ones from falling off. Just flip it over for the older kids and the recession disappears. This bed works best for kids ages 4 and up, according to the label.

It also comes with its own cover (shown above), which is removable for washing.

Price: It's marked down to $56.54 on the AeroBed website, and Amazon and Home Depot both have it for slightly more. You may also be able to find one near you with this store locator.

There's also a Queen and Twin Air Mattress Section, an Accessories Section, and a Clearance Section on the AeroBed site - where, interestingly, the AeroBed for Kids can be found.

Are these recommended for children/toddlers? Yes, they are specifically designed for children ages 4 and up.

What are the delivery options? Shipping charges vary according to weight; see chart here. However, it should be noted that when I did my 'mock purchase' of the kids' air mattress, it showed me this for the shipping part (so you may luck out and get free shipping!):

Do they have any safety (or other) certifications? None found.

Is there an in-home trial offered? No.

Refund/warranty policies? Refunds are offered for unused merchandise within 30 days following purchase.  You must call them for a Refund Authorization before mailing your item  back to them. Warranties vary with product; Aerobed Kids Inflatable Mattress have a 1-year warranty. Keep your original receipt as proof of purchase.

Pros:

  • Inflates easily and quickly in minutes
  • Deflates just as easily with the 'Whoosh' patented deflator and stashes away for space-efficient travel
  • Supports up to 300 pounds
  • Comes with its own removable, washable cover and pump

Cons:

  • No certifications found
  • Some felt it was noisy when the child moved
  • Some felt it deflated too much overnight

Bottom Line:

If you have a frequent overnighter or an avid traveling family, this could be perfect. Be sure it works great as soon as you get it so that a refund can be processed on time otherwise (you only get 30 days). Overall, if it's free of defects, we think it's a good value to grab at current prices.

DreamFoam Arctic Dreams by Brooklyn Bedding

Now we're heading in for the final stop on our tour, and we hope you've got some good ideas to help you decide on your kids' best online mattress by now! Our last review of the day will be on the DreamFoam Arctic Dreams Cooling Gel Mattress by Brooklyn Bedding

If your kid gets too hot while sleeping, we've found your solution. The Arctic Dreams Mattress in Twin size is one of the best twin mattresses for kids. It utilizes cutting edge viscoelastic foam and has an optimally responsive polymer structure to replace latex or springs while ensuring your easily-overheated kid stays cool enough to sleep all night.

Starting at a low price for the Twin size at $179, the Arctic Dreams model is not only affordable, but also features the following:

More great news? That foam we talked about earlier is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning your kid's mattress is free of CFCs, ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, and more (listed above.)

Price: Twin size mattresses start out at $179.

Are these recommended for children/toddlers? This mattress is best for lightweight folks (heavier people may not enjoy the sinkage which occurs due to their weight while sleeping), and the twin size fits a kid in elementary school or even middle/high school perfectly. The best part is that you can't sleep hot with this type of mattress even if you try - so the ideal match is an easily overheated, lighter, smaller person - a kid, therefore, would be ideal!

What are the delivery options? This mattress will arrive by UPS Ground free of charge. You can adjust your best two-day range on the checkout screen in the comment box.

Do they have any safety (or other) certifications? They have CertiPUR-US certification on their foams. They are also OEKO-TEX certified.

Is there an in-home trial offered? Yes, 120 days.

Refund/warranty policies? You can return your mattress for a full refund after the 30th day and before the 100th day of your in-home trial. These mattresses come with a 10 year warranty.

Pros:

  • Great for back, stomach, and side sleepers
  • Made in the USA
  • Affordable
  • Sleeps very cool (hence the Arctic Dreams!)
  • 120 day in-home trial to test out the mattress

Cons:

  • Larger, heavier people complain that their mattress damages quickly; lighter folks' mattresses remain intact over the same period of time
  • Not the greatest edge support

Bottom Line:

These are great for small, light people and especially superb for those who overheat while sleeping. Perfect for a kid who wakes up complaining they're too hot! Stay away from the edges for best support.

Are you ready to shop for your littles' mattress now? Remember to check labels carefully, look for certifications, and ask as many questions as you need to. With the number of hours they may end up spending on this bed, you can't possibly ask too many. Good luck!
